JEE Main Chemistry has three distinct components — Physical, Inorganic, and Organic — each contributing roughly 10 questions. NTA's chapter selection within each component has been consistent enough over 2021-2025 to enable a reasonably confident prediction for 2026. Physical chemistry contributes 10 questions consistently. Based on 2021-2025 data: Electrochemistry (Nernst equation, Faraday's laws): 2 questions annually in at least 3 of 4 sessions. Chemical Kinetics (rate laws, half-life, Arrhenius equation): 2 questions, 4 of 4 sessions. Solutions and Colligative Properties: 1-2 questions. Thermodynamics and Thermochemistry: 1-2 questions. Ionic Equilibrium (Ksp, buffer, pH): 1-2 questions. Solid State: 1 question (predictable crystal structure and defect questions). Remaining: scattered from Surface Chemistry, Chemical Equilibrium, and Atomic Structure.
For 2026, expect Electrochemistry and Chemical Kinetics to remain the dominant Physical Chemistry topics. These two alone account for 4-5 questions per session. Inorganic chemistry has traditionally been the most volatile section year-to-year, but certain chapters are nearly certain to appear: Coordination Chemistry (isomerism, CFSE, VBT, colour, magnetic properties): 2-3 questions every session without exception. p-Block Elements: 2-3 questions, particularly Group 15-17 reactions and structures. d and f-Block (transition metals, KMnO₄, K₂Cr₂O₇): 1-2 questions. s-Block and Hydrogen: 1 question. General Principles of Metallurgy: 1 question. Qualitative Analysis / Salt Analysis: 0-1 question.
For 2026, NTA has shown increasing interest in CFSE calculations and crystal field theory in coordination chemistry. Expect 1 CFSE-based numerical question in the integer-answer section. p-Block continues to dominate Inorganic Chemistry — particularly the oxoacids of nitrogen, sulphur, and halogens. Organic Chemistry: Expected Topics (2026)
Organic chemistry contributes the most predictable questions: Name Reactions (Aldol, Cannizzaro, Diels-Alder, Sandmeyer, Reimer-Tiemann): 1-2 questions every session. Mechanisms (SN1 vs. SN2, E1 vs. E2, EAS): 1-2 questions. Alcohol and Phenol reactions: 1-2 questions. Carbonyl compound reactions (Aldehydes, Ketones, Carboxylic acids): 2 questions. Polymers and Biomolecules: 1 question. Practical Organic Chemistry (tests, identification): 1 question.
For 2026, NTA has shown a trend toward multi-step synthesis questions where you must identify a reactant, intermediate, or product in a sequence. Practice these multi-step identification questions specifically — they are high difficulty but high marks. The reagent-identification format (given starting material and product, identify reagent A) appears in 2-3 organic questions per session.
Integer-Type Chemistry Questions
The 5 integer-type Chemistry questions (questions 16-20) have consistently come from: one Physical Chemistry calculation (Nernst, Faraday, or rate law); one numerical Inorganic (coordination number, magnetic moment calculation); one Organic (product carbon count or yield calculation); one Thermodynamics (ΔH, ΔS, or ΔG calculation); one miscellaneous. The integer-answer section Chemistry questions are often easier than MCQ questions — they test direct formula application without the confusion of wrong options.
Action Plan for 2026
Priority 1: Electrochemistry + Chemical Kinetics (Physical). Priority 2: Coordination Chemistry + p-Block (Inorganic). Priority 3: Carbonyl chemistry + Name Reactions (Organic).
