JEE Main Chemistry: 5-Year Trend Analysis (2021-2025)
Eight JEE Main sessions from January 2021 through April 2025 form a statistically significant dataset for Chemistry. This analysis reveals which chapters NTA treats as constants (appearing every session), which appear cyclically, and how the difficulty distribution has shifted. The patterns inform a preparation strategy calibrated to 2026 realities rather than outdated assumptions.

Chemical Kinetics: 2 questions per session, 100% appearance rate. Electrochemistry: 2 questions, 100% appearance. Chemical Equilibrium and Ionic Equilibrium (combined): 1-2 questions, 100% appearance. Thermodynamics (Enthalpy, Gibbs, Entropy): 1-2 questions, 100%. Solutions (Raoult's law, colligative properties): 1 question, 100%. These five Physical Chemistry areas together account for 7-9 questions (28-36 marks) in every session — they are the guaranteed Physical Chemistry score. For complete physical chemistry formula reference, see our Physical Chemistry Formulas Guide. Take a free mock test on JEE Main Chemistry to test your performance across all three sub-sections.

Coordination Chemistry: 2-3 questions, 100% appearance. p-Block Elements: 2 questions, 100% appearance. d and f-Block Elements: 1 question, 100% appearance. These three inorganic chapters together give 5-6 questions (20-24 marks) every session. Their combined study is the most reliable inorganic investment. The content within these chapters varies (different sub-topics cycle), but the marks are always there. For coordination chemistry in depth, see our Coordination Chemistry Guide.
High-Frequency Organic Chemistry Chapters
Carbonyl Compounds (Aldehydes, Ketones, Carboxylic Acids): 8 of 8 sessions (2-3 questions). General Organic Chemistry (Mechanisms, Isomerism): 8 of 8 sessions (1-2 questions). Amines: 7 of 8 sessions (1 question). Haloalkanes and Haloarenes: 7 of 8 sessions (1 question). Alcohols, Phenols, Ethers: 6 of 8 sessions (1-2 questions). Together, organic chemistry contributes 5-7 questions per session with this distribution.
Year-on-Year Shifts (2021 → 2025)
Increasing: Organic Synthesis questions (multi-step, identifying intermediates) — up from 1 per session in 2021 to 2-3 per session in 2025. IUPAC Nomenclature complexity — more substituted structures with multiple functional groups. Electrochemistry integer-type questions — calculation-intensive, increasing from 0.5 to 1.2 questions per session. Decreasing: s-Block Elements as standalone topic — absorbed into other chapters' context. Environmental Chemistry as direct topic — reduced to 0-1 per session from 1-2 in 2021-2022. Solid State direct calculation questions — reduced though conceptual questions remain.
Notable Single-Year Patterns
2024 January: unusually high Polymers and Biomolecules (3 questions combined, vs. 1-2 typical). 2024 April: returned to 1-2, suggesting the 2024 January paper was an outlier. 2025 April: first session with a coordination chemistry crystal field stabilisation energy numerical calculation — suggesting increased difficulty in this sub-topic going forward. 2025 January and April: both had 2 electrochemistry questions, the highest since 2021. This trend of elevated electrochemistry difficulty will likely continue in 2026.
Strategic Implications for 2026
The five-year data supports: (1) Physical Chemistry gives the most consistent marks and is most formula-driven — master it first. (2) Inorganic reliability comes from three chapters — coordination, p-block, d/f-block — focus here. (3) Organic Chemistry is most volatile in sub-topic but consistent in marks — understand mechanisms over memorising reactions.
