JEE Main Physics Chapter Weightage 2026: Full Guide
Knowing which chapters to prioritize is as important as knowing how to study them. JEE Main Physics has 30 chapters, but the exam consistently draws the majority of its marks from a much smaller set. A strategic aspirant who allocates study time proportional to chapter weightage will consistently outscore a student who divides time equally across all chapters. This guide provides a data-driven chapter weightage analysis based on 2022-2025 JEE Main papers.

The Tier 1 chapters together account for roughly 15 to 20 marks in every JEE Main session. These are non-negotiable for any student targeting 80+ in physics. The Tier 1 chapters are: Mechanics (including kinematics, Newton's laws, work-energy-power, and rotational motion), Electrostatics and Current Electricity combined, and Modern Physics.
Mechanics alone accounts for 8-10 marks. For the complete mechanics strategy, see our mechanics master guide. Electrostatics and current electricity together contribute 4-5 marks. For the overall score strategy, see our physics score guide.
Tier 2: High-Weightage Chapters (8-12 marks)
Tier 2 chapters contribute around 8 to 12 marks collectively. These are: Electromagnetic Induction and AC Circuits (2-3 marks), Optics — both ray and wave (2-3 marks), Thermodynamics (1-2 marks), and Waves and Oscillations (1-2 marks). Electromagnetic induction has shown an increasing trend in JEE Main 2024-2025 and is a particularly important Tier 2 investment for 2026. Our electromagnetic induction guide covers everything you need. Our optics guide covers both ray and wave optics. Take a free mock test after covering your Tier 2 chapters to assess your readiness.

Tier 3 chapters contribute around 4 to 6 marks collectively. These should be studied after Tier 1 and 2 are comfortable: Magnetic Effects of Current (1-2 marks), Gravitation (1-2 marks), Fluid Mechanics (1 mark), Circular Motion (1 mark), and Electromagnetic Waves (1 mark). Gravitation and circular motion both leverage mechanics skills, making them faster to prepare for students who have built a strong Tier 1 foundation. Electromagnetic waves and communication systems are almost entirely conceptual, making them very high return on time invested.
Tier 4: Low-Weightage but Guaranteed Questions (2-3 marks)
Tier 4 chapters appear infrequently but almost always contribute at least one question per paper: Communication Systems (1 mark), Nuclear Physics (1 mark), and Capacitors (1 mark). The communication systems question is almost always conceptual and is one of the most mark-efficient chapters to prepare — a two-hour focused session covers all JEE-relevant material.
Recommended Preparation Order
Weeks 1-2: Complete Tier 1 (mechanics fully, electrostatics, modern physics). Weeks 3-4: Cover Tier 2 (EMI, optics, thermodynamics, waves). Week 5: Tier 3 chapters using targeted guides.
