JEE Main Physics: Best Class 11 Chapters to Master

Class 11 Physics contributes approximately 40-45% of JEE Main Physics marks — roughly 12-13 questions out of 30. Mechanics (the dominant Class 11 topic) alone accounts for 8-10 questions. Knowing which Class 11 chapters to prioritise and how deeply to study each is one of the most strategically important decisions in your JEE Main preparation.

Class 11 Physics Chapter Weightage in JEE Main

Mechanics (Kinematics, Newton's Laws, Work-Energy, Circular Motion, Rotational Motion, Gravitation): 7-10 questions per session. This is the single largest chapter group in JEE Main Physics. Priority 1: Mechanics — The Essential Foundation

Rotational motion is the hardest Chapter in Class 11 Physics and also the highest-yield. Invest three to four weeks here — the effort pays dividends across everything from rigid body dynamics to angular momentum conservation problems. Priority 2: SHM and Waves

Simple Harmonic Motion is Class 11 Physics's most elegant chapter — the differential equation, phase relationships, and energy in SHM are compact and the question types are highly predictable. Two weeks of focused SHM study yields 1-2 questions with very high reliability. Waves (string waves, sound waves, standing waves, resonance) adds 1-2 more questions. Priority 3: Thermal Physics

They take 10-12 days to cover adequately. Fluid statics (pressure, buoyancy, Pascal's law) is more reliably tested than fluid dynamics (Bernoulli). What to Skip (Time-Constrained Students)

If you are preparing under severe time pressure (final 2 months), the lowest-priority Class 11 Physics topics are: Thermal Expansion and Calorimetry (just 1 question, absorbed within the thermal cluster), Communication Systems from Class 12 cross-references, and Experimental Physics from Class 11 specifically (the Class 12 version is tested more). Do not skip Mechanics — the trade-off is never worth it given 7-10 questions at stake.
