JEE Main Physics: 15 Common Mistakes to Avoid
Analysis of thousands of JEE Main Physics answer sheets reveals that a large fraction of marks are lost not through lack of knowledge but through avoidable errors. These mistakes cluster into recognizable categories: sign errors, unit problems, wrong formula selection, conceptual confusions, and exam management errors. Eliminating even half of these from your repertoire can add 8-12 marks to your physics score without any additional concept learning.

Mistake 1: Sign errors in potential energy problems. Students forget the negative sign in the formula for gravitational potential energy at large distances. Fix: always write the formula with all signs before substituting numbers.
Mistake 2: Unit inconsistency. Mixing kilometers and meters in the same calculation is a very common source of wrong answers in integer-type problems. Fix: convert all quantities to SI units before starting any calculation.
Mistake 3: Forgetting to square or take the square root at the final step. Fix: write the final formula clearly before substituting, and check the algebraic form of your answer against the formula.
Mistake 4: Arithmetic errors under time pressure. Fix: practice mental math consistently in your daily preparation, and always do a quick order-of-magnitude check on your numerical answer.
Conceptual Confusions
Mistake 5: Confusing centripetal force with an additional force. Centripetal force is the net inward force — it is provided by the other forces, not added to them. Fix: never write "centripetal force" in a free-body diagram. Connect with our circular motion guide to reinforce this.
Mistake 6: Confusing capacitors in series and parallel with the corresponding rules for resistors. Fix: derive the series/parallel capacitor rules from first principles so the reason is clear. Take a free mock test on circuit problems to check your accuracy.
Mistake 7: Using conservation of mechanical energy when non-conservative forces are present. Fix: always check explicitly whether any non-conservative forces are present before applying energy conservation.

Mistake 8: Applying kinematic equations to non-constant-acceleration problems. SUVAT equations are valid only for uniform acceleration. Fix: before using any kinematic equation, verify that acceleration is constant in the problem.
Mistake 9: Using the wrong formula for the magnetic field at different points. The axial and equatorial field formulas for a magnetic dipole differ by both a factor of two and a direction reversal. Fix: keep these formulas on your formula sheet side by side with direction arrows explicitly shown.
Mistake 10: Misapplying the resonance frequency formula. Fix: know that the resonant frequency formula is valid for series RLC, and understand that the peak current occurs at resonance only in series circuits. See our EMI and AC circuits guide.
Exam Management Mistakes
Mistake 11: Attempting section B in order rather than by difficulty. Fix: read all five integer questions first, rate them by confidence, and attempt in confidence order.
Mistake 12: Spending more than four minutes on any section A question. Fix: set a hard four-minute limit per question in your mock tests to build the habit of moving on.
Mistake 13: Not using negative marking strategically. The optimal approach is to attempt any question where you can eliminate two of four options. See our mock test strategy guide.
Mistake 14: Changing correct answers. Fix: change an answer only when you have identified a specific factual error in your original reasoning, not just a feeling of unease.
Mistake 15: Insufficient time on revision after completing the paper. Fix: always aim to complete section A with eight to ten minutes remaining for a final review pass. See our physics score guide and sign up free for our error-tracking tool.
